Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS)

For Grades 4-12

For each portion of the year, students research and study a topic area, then complete a problem solving booklet based on a Future Scene that is written about the topic of study.  A team of evaluators reads the booklet and provides extensive written feedback focused on improvement of writing and thinking skills. The schedule for the year is as follows:

Practice Problem 1 (Due October 27, 2023)

  • Topic: Tourism

  • Steps 1-3 of the process completed,

  • Coaches may help students in whatever way they deem necessary

Practice Problem 2 (Due December 22, 2023)

  • Topic: Urban Shift

  • All 6 steps of the process completed

  • Coaches may help students in whatever way they deem necessary

Qualifying Problem (Due February 16, 2024)

  • Topic: Antarctica

  • All 6 steps completed

  • "Competitive conditions" must be met - 2 consecutive hours, unassisted by the coach.

State Bowl (April 18-20, 2024)

  • Topic: Autonomous Transportation

  • Location: Green Lake Conference Center

Global Issues Rookie Division

Rookie is a noncompetitive component in which teams of students complete the same three problems, but write a shorter booklet with fewer challenges and solutions. There are no time limits.

Bridge to Global Issues

This is a one-time non-competitive option for new coaches to gradually work into the Global Issues component

LEAP - LEarning About Problem Solving

The fee includes LEAP Instructional Lessons, 12 lesson plans to introduce problem solving to students, and a 1 year registration for LEAP with Challenge Scenes,  with multiple scenes to use following the Instructional Lessons. Work on two of the Challenge Scenes can be submitted to Wisconsin FPS during the year for feedback.

  • $60 - Includes the LEAP Instructional Lessons and 1 year registration for LEAP with Challenge Scenes. Use the Registration Form link above to purchase.

  • Note - Each teacher using the lesson plans should have their own purchased copy of the manual.

  • Note - In subsequent years there will be an option to register for just LEAP with Challenge Scenes, if you already have the Instructional Lessons.
