TEAM PROBLEM SOLVING COMPETITION (4-12)
Teams of four students work on practice problem
1, practice problem 2, and the qualifying problem (QP). There are 3 competitive
divisions: Junior (4-6), Middle (7-9), and Senior (10-12). Registration
of a team entitles the coach to submit one booklet for evaluation for each
of the three problems. The regular team component can be implemented as
an extra-curricular activity or within the curriculum of the regular school
day. Qualifying teams will be invited to the State Bowl in April. Teams
that place first in each division at the State Bowl are eligible for the
International Conference in June. |

INDIVIDUAL/PARTNER BOOKLETS, Problem 3 (4-12)
Teams cannot have more than four students for
the third qualifying problem. Sometimes coaches don't have an exact number
of students and want some students to write individual or partner booklets.
These booklets can be submitted for evaluation
on Problem 3 only. |

COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING COMPETITION (4-12)
Student individuals or teams of any size apply
the problem solving process to actual problems in their school or community,
and implement the real solutions they design. Students throughout the international
program have made a real difference through CmPS. First place teams are
invited to State Bowl and are eligible for the International Conference.
There are many specific requirements for CmPS
projects. Please request a CmPS information packet from the office
if you are planning to work on a project. Registration forms and
fees are submitted with the project in February.

SCENARIO WRITING COMPETITION (4 - 12)
Students submit short stories (1500 words) based
on one of the year's topics, developing one main character in a plot that
is a logical outgrowth of current issues. Scenario writers should research
the topic area but do not need to be FPS team members. Top writers present
at State Bowl. First place writers are eligible for the International Conference.
Registration forms and fees are submitted with
the story in January

NON-COMPETITIVE PARTICIPATION (K-12)
There are three ways to participate in non-competitive
problem solving:
-
Action-Based(K-8) - Teachers select a topic
each semester from several offered. Students complete a simplified process
booklet.
-
Short Booklets (4-12) - Students use the regular
topics and process writing for the year, but complete a shortened booklet.
-
No QP Conditions - Students complete full
competitive booklets but do not work under competitive conditions (time
limit, no help) for problem 3.
